Weekly Blog Assignment: Week 5

I think I keep saying it every week, but I don’t know how anything can beat a week dedicated to audio. I absolutely love radio!! It is what gets me through my day! I haven’t always been this way but more recently I have come to a great appreciation of radio. I love to listen to NPR, multiple different types of podcast (This American Life, The Investors Podcast, Pardon My Take, Serial, The Monday Morning Podcast (I love Bill Burr), and other news stations. I say all of this to say that I have a great appreciation for radio programs.

My favorite radio to listen to is “Old Time Radio”. Specially radio programs from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. There is a program on WAMU every week called The Big Broadcast were they play old time radio shows from different era’s. That is must listen to radio every week for me. My favorite activity of this week was listening to the 3 radio programs played this week and live tweeting my thought. War of the Worlds is still by far my favorite. Each time I listen to it, I come up with a different scernio in my head. That is what is best about radio. You can take what is said and turn it into whatever you want. Each person listening to a radio program can choose whatever different thought they have. That is the absolute beauty of Radio.

The different activities for this week were so much fun. The Frequency 2156 activity was really cool! I love the concept. Being able to listen to so many different messages created so may different thoughts in my head. Your imagination can truly take over on the website! I also really enjoyed making a voice mail while playing the role of Vic. I left a voicemail for Vic’s mom to explain his and Bloods current status.

The semester is flying by so fast. I can’t believe we have gone through 5 weeks already. I feel really good about my position in this class. Life outside of class is extremely busy (Baby, Job, Teething Baby, Walking Baby, Baby that gets into everything) but the class work in manageable and I appreciate the break away from real life for a little bit

Cheers Everyone.

Final Year, New Course: Week one in DS106

I am extremely excited that this is my final semester as an undergraduate student. My undergraduate story is longer than the average student. I started my undergraduate degree in 2006 and will finish this year. Life happened in the middle of that time frame, but I am extremely proud to finally complete this goal that I set forth.
With these being my final semester, I decided to take a course that sits outside my major (Leadership and Management) I chose DS 106 because I heard through fellow classmates that this course was one of their favorites at UMW. I work in a heavy technology environment as well so I felt that this course would offer many takeaways.
This first week in DS 106 has been a huge eye opening experience. What I mean by that is I didn’t realize how little I knew about website design. There will definitely be a learning curve that I will need to catch up on but I am ready for the challenge. The one aspect in this class that I feel comfortable with from the start is the use of social media. I have been using Twitter and Instagram for over 5 years and love what each platform brings. I am excited to use social media to interact with my fellow students in this class.
One of the most intriguing part of this course I am looking forward to is reading and learning about the apocalypse. Personally, I do not have much a relationship with fictional apocalyptical material. I am much more of a non-fictional fan so I am excited to take a step out of my norm. I believe the only experience I have with post apocalyptical material is watching The Walking Dead. I really enjoyed the first four seasons of the show, but quickly lost interest. The biggest problem I had with the show was the plot lacking any urgency to find out the reason behind everyone getting sick. It seemed like the show just adds a new villain each season and they fight the same old fights. There ends my rant on the walking dead…
Sticking with the theme of The Walking Dead, I would have to say that genre of post-apocalyptic fiction is the most intriguing to me. This is probably because out of all the genres, I feel like a deadly virus or sickness is probably the most plausible to occur. I have such a non-fiction mind, I have to find some way back to my root! Ha!
I am extremely excited about participating in this course and look forward to blogging about my journey along the way!
